A 15-year-old was arrested on June 12 for the theft of a Kia Optima that was stolen from a residence back in February.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, the vehicle was reported stolen on Feb. 2. The victim provided video footage showing the car being taken right from her driveway between 8:35 a.m. and 8:52 a.m.
The vehicle was locked, with no keys inside, reported police.
No witnesses or additional surveillance footage of that night were recovered from the neighborhood near Southwest 8th Place in Cape Coral.
On Feb. 5, the stolen Kia Optima was found abandoned on Northwest 7th Street.
According to CCPD, forensic experts processed the vehicle and collected latent prints. Notably, the words “Kia Boys" were written in lip gloss on the inside of the driver's and passenger's windows.
Forensic analysis identified Kamari Thornton as the suspect. Thornton was never given access to the vehicle, police say.
Thornton was located and arrested on June 12 at his residence.
He was taken to the Lee County Jail on charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle and burglary of an occupied conveyance.
Thornton had also been arrested earlier this year, on Feb. 18, after crashing a stolen Jaguar into two vehicles and fleeing the scene on foot.
