Two suspected car burglars were caught on camera early Wednesday morning, prompting quick action from neighbors and a response from Lee County deputies that led to arrests.
Around 4 a.m. Friday, Abe Vazquez was awake when he heard a noise and checked his security cameras. What he saw prompted an immediate call to law enforcement.
“I said, what was that noise? I thought it was too early for a delivery,” Vazquez said. “Lo and behold, I see an individual trying to get into our cars.”
Surveillance footage from multiple homes on Muriel Street in Lehigh Acres shows two masked individuals going from driveway to driveway, pulling at car door handles. While nothing was taken from Vazquez’s vehicles, his neighbor, Yajaira Gil, said another house on the street was not as lucky.
“In my house, thank God, no,” Gil said. “But at another neighbor’s house — yes.”
Deputies returned later Friday morning and informed residents that two suspects had been taken into custody, found a few streets over. Gil said deputies told her the suspects were teenagers.
“Thank God they were working fast,” Gil said. “I was so happy they found them, because if not, they’d probably do it again in the neighborhood.”
Both neighbors said they want charges pressed and hope this sends a message to others.
“I’m sorry for you,” Vazquez said, addressing the teens. “Wrong place, wrong time. Bad decision — bad consequences.”
“They need to be working, not doing this stuff,” Gil said.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the names of the suspects.
