Yanko Romero, the man accused of shooting and killing Alex Johnson near the Harbor Grand apartments in Fort Myers, is being held without bond after another court appearance on Monday.

The court focused on Romero’s new charges for allegedly attacking and almost killing his cellmate . Gulf Coast News has received pictures of Romero’s cellmate, Brandt Diaz.

Diaz is unable to speak or eat after an attack, and his attorney described his injuries as life-altering.

The pictures show both Diaz’s eyes swollen shut , nose sewn back together and teeth missing.

The family's attorney, Rene Suarez, said Romero should never have been put in Diaz's jail cell. Romero is a suspected murderer and has mental health issues. Documents show Romero believes he is “The Chosen One." Romero is also the lead suspect in a 2023 murder in Inkster, Michigan.

The sheriff's office told Gulf Coast News that it followed standard procedures, and it was justified in putting the men together. The sheriff's office said Romero was under video surveillance.

Romero will be in court again next month for his arraignment on the new charges.
