As the 10th anniversary of a murder that shocked Southwest Florida approaches, the focus turns to Mark Sievers, who sits on death row for orchestrating the killing of his wife, Dr. Teresa Sievers.
Mark Sievers is currently waiting for an evidentiary hearing.
In an exclusive WINK News interview from three years ago, Jimmy Rodgers, one of the convicted killers hired by Sievers to kill his wife, shared his perspective.
Rodgers claimed there was no conspiracy and accused his former friend Curtis Wayne Wright of lying during his plea deal testimony.
Wright testified in court that he and Rodgers were hired by Mark Sievers and promised a significant payout to kill Dr. Teresa Sievers. Wright said that Dr. Sievers arrived home earlier than expected and that both he and Rodgers used a hammer to kill her.
"I hit her with the hammer," Wright said. "I actually think that she thought I was Mark. She said, 'Why?'"
Rodgers disputed Wright's account, stating that they waited in the driveway for Dr. Sievers to arrive and were invited to stay, as they were supposed to do work for the Sievers family.
"She seemed to already be in a bad mood," Rodgers said, describing an argument between Dr. Sievers and Wright.
Rodgers claimed that Wright alone was responsible for Dr. Sievers' death, contradicting the trial's testimony.
"So by your account of this story, then virtually everything that we heard at trial is wrong," Rodgers confirmed.
Mark Sievers plans to have Rodgers testify in his attempt to get off death row.
Amanda Hall of WINK News spoke with Dr. Teresa Sievers' sister, who expressed skepticism about Rodgers' claims.
"Jimmy Rogers thinks Mark is innocent," she said. "Isn't that interesting that they might be helping each other?"
She added, "There is so much digital evidence that's just, it's irrefutable."
The hearing will continue to unfold as the court proceedings advance.
