The Shell Factory in North Fort Myers, once an iconic landmark, now stands dormant and overgrown. Neighbors are eager to know what the future holds for this beloved site.
WINK News reporter Mariaregina Mendoza was on the scene, noting the broken sign, overgrown grass, and locked gates. Residents expressed concerns about the decline of the property.
"I think somebody needs to go in and reevaluate the situation and realize that there are still people who live near the Shell Factory, and they need to step it up and get it fixed," said North Fort Myers resident Tiffany Potthoff.

County officials confirmed that the owner faces violations for a damaged roof and broken signage. A code enforcement hearing is scheduled for Monday. If issues aren't addressed by then, daily fines could be imposed.
With rides gone and doors shut, the Shell Factory is now just a shadow of its former self.
"It was one place that you could actually go to and enjoy. Unfortunately, with them being closed, it's devastating," said Potthoff.
Neighbors are most bothered by the lack of upkeep.
"You drive by, you worry about, like, the sign falling. You're worrying about debris falling, hopefully, God forbid, we don't have any hurricanes coming up," Potthoff added.
Residents are seeking answers about the property's future and who is responsible for its maintenance.
"It should be maintained. It should be little more taken care of. You know, if you're gonna do something with it, do something with it. Just don't let it sit there and rot down to nothing," said David Ertle, another North Fort Myers resident.

For many, the Shell Factory holds cherished memories and deserves better care.
"It breaks my heart, you know, it's been there my whole life. I used to have the machines put out the little dinosaurs. And we were kids, we would always run to go get, you know, plastic toys. It was a happy place, it really was," Ertle said.
The community hopes for a resolution that will restore the Shell Factory to its former glory. WINK News will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
