A former Lee County deputy accused of DUI is now facing new charges, which include perjury and filing a fraudulent insurance claim.
Matthew Curbelo, who resigned from his position in April, was suspected of driving under the influence and taken to jail as a "disorderly inmate."
Law enforcement said Curbelo forged his estranged wife Amanda Curbelo's, signature on an insurance claim document. He allegedly had the document notarized without her knowledge and submitted it to the insurance company.
The claim was for more than $94,000.
Jessica Handley, who notarized the document, works from home and is employed by the Lee County Clerk's Office.
She was introduced to Curbelo through a mutual friend. Despite the controversy, her notary license remains clear and active, and she has not been arrested.
When Curbelo was arrested, he escaped the Lee County Jail by pressing a few buttons.
Curbelo's escape was detailed in a booking report, which revealed he passed through three secured doors.
Deputies reported that Curbelo approached an interior door, pressed the button to open it, and then opened a second door. He waited for an employee to open the third door from the outside, allowing him to walk away.
He was later detained with the assistance of the Fort Myers Police Department.
Both cases remain open and active. His arraignment for the escape charge is scheduled for July 14 at 8:30 a.m.
