A family's quest for justice is still underway, as accused killer Yanko Romero is scheduled for an arraignment following the brutal attack of his cellmate, Brandt Diaz.
Romero's arraignment is set for 8:30 a.m. Monday, but before the hearing, he filed a waiver of arraignment and written plea of not guilty.
WINK News also exclusively learned that at this time Romero's attorney has motioned to withdraw from the case due to unknown conflicts with the defendant.
Brandt Diaz is the inmate who was put in the same cell as Yanko Romero after Romero's arrest for a shooting in Fort Myers last month.
Deputies said Romero viciously attacked Diaz, leaving him with severe facial injuries.
According to the Florida Model Jail Standards, the inmates were roomed together appropriately.
However, many argue that the nature of Romero's violent crimes far outweighed Diaz's.
Diaz was in jail for grand theft auto, burglary and larceny.
As for Romero? Murder.
Romero is the man officials say shot and killed Alex Johnson last month at the Oasis Grand apartment complex.
Additionally, Romero has been linked as a main suspect in a separate murder case up in Michigan in 2023.
