Bailey's General Store, a beloved Sanibel staple, is celebrating its 126th year with a new chapter. The family-run business, now in its fourth generation, has reopened with a fresh look and renewed spirit, much to the delight of the local community.
Richard Johnson of A Little Bit of Bailey's emphasized the collective effort behind this milestone.
"It's taken a whole family and whole community effort to get us to this point," he said.
He expressed the family's previous concern about not being able to support the community post-hurricane.
"Our biggest concern was that we were not able to reopen and be there for the community and provide that sense of normalcy that we've always done in the past," said Johnson. "And so that's when we very quickly, made the decision that we would elevate and be a little bit higher."
Calli Johnson, also with A Little Bit of Bailey's, shared her excitement about the store's reopening.
"That's part of our identity. And this guy's got a spark back," she said.
Bailey's General Store in Sanibel is making a comeback after Hurricane Ian devastated the beloved family-owned business nearly three years ago.
The new store, located on Rabbit Road, offers an elevated storefront and a slightly different layout. The Johnsons mentioned that some new features are still in development, but the community's response has been overwhelmingly positive.
"We're so happy you're here!" exclaimed one customer.
Another longtime visitor shared, "Yeah, we've been coming out here since the 1980s."
The store's legacy, spanning over a century, has become synonymous with resilience and community spirit.
"You know, getting up in the morning and being able to come to the store, being able to greet people walking in, is kind of what I live for these days," said Johnson.
As Sanibel embraces this new version of Bailey's, the store's history and community ties remain as strong as ever. [Placeholder for a visual of the store's new look]
The Johnson family says that the original Bailey's General Store is expected to have its groundbreaking by the end of the year.
