Labor Day weekend marked a special occasion for Florida anglers this year as two highly anticipated fishing seasons opened simultaneously. The recreational snook and snapper seasons have officially begun across most of the west coast, drawing big crowds to local marinas.
At Stump Pass Marina, anglers celebrated more than just the holiday. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced that anglers can keep one fish per day within slot size limits. This rule is meant to protect the fish population while still allowing for recreational fishing.
Captain Robbie Sanger expressed excitement about the open seasons.
"You know, when all the fish are open, you can bring a lot more fish home," said Sanger. "When the seasons are closed, you don't want to spend the money to just go out there and have a good time as much as not bringing fish home."
Local angler John Whitehead, who has been fishing in the area for 60 years, shared his love for the water.
"I don't necessarily fish for one variety of fish, I just fish for whatever's biting at the time," said Whitehead. "And I don't keep a lot of fish because if I let them go, I can catch them again."
The docks were bustling with activity as anglers enjoyed the opportunity to fish for both snook and red snapper. With boats packed and lines cast, there was no better way to spend the day for those seeking tight lines and fresh fillets.
