The Fort Myers Beach town council unanimously approved the rebuilding of the pier, which was destroyed during Hurricane Ian back in 2022.
Jason Smalley with the Planning and Zoning Department said the rebuilt pier will feature elevated walkways and lighting, along with upgrades such as three shade structures and a fish cleaning station.
Smalley said the new pier will be 12 feet wide and about 1,000 feet long.
Fort Myers Beach will contribute more than $11 million, and Lee County will contribute about $17 million to the project.
Smalley said the Fort Myers Beach Local Planning Agency recommended removing a condition that would allow rebuilding during sea turtle nesting season. He said if work occurs, then state approval is required, and the contractor will have to monitor turtles.
