The Peace River rivalry between Charlotte and Port Charlotte has long been a staple in the Charlotte County community. This year, during our Friday night WINK tailgate, the magnitude of the matchup was palpable.

"This game is huge for the community, especially everything we’ve been through with hurricanes in the past," said one attendee. "This is the one game every year [that] brings out the whole community."

The community packed the bleachers for the anticipated game. On the opening drive, Port Charlotte quarterback Logan Flaherty launched a deep pass, only to have it intercepted by Connor Coruse. However, the Tarpons failed to convert the turnover into points.

Charlotte had another chance to capitalize after recovering a muffed punt and getting into field goal range, but Port Charlotte blocked the kick.

Following that big play, Port Charlotte put the first points on the board. Flaherty, fresh off his University of Central Florida commitment, connected with Kenan Thomas for a 57-yard touchdown, making it 7-0 Pirates in the second quarter.

The Tarpons marched down the field again, getting into field goal range. Yet, Port Charlotte blocked their 35-yard attempt again.
