A tragic event in Lehigh Acres has left the community mourning after a murder-suicide involving a student from Lehigh Acres Middle School. The heartbreaking news was confirmed in a statement from the school's principal to parents.

"Dear Bruin Families, we are deeply saddened to share the news that one of our students has passed away," read the statement. "We know that some of you may have already heard about this tragic incident, and our hearts go out to all affected. The district is offering counseling services for both students and staff who may need emotional support during this difficult time."

The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating this incident along with another unrelated event. They expressed their condolences, stating that tragedies like these can impact an entire community. They encouraged anyone struggling to seek help.

WINK News spoke with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to discuss available resources for those facing suicidal thoughts. Stacy Zenitz from the foundation highlighted the importance of reaching out.

"Because of the new 988 number that's come out in the last few years, I feel like it's easier for someone who may be struggling to get help, because so many people are on their cell phones," said Zenitz. "If you're worried that somebody may be depressed or suicidal, 100% look at the resources on how to talk to somebody, because, as I said, you could be the person to save their life."

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is planning an "Out of the Darkness" walk for suicide awareness on November 15 at Wa-Ke Hatchee Park.

WINK News will continue to provide updates on this investigation as more information becomes available.
