Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) men's basketball player Brandon Dwyer scored the first points of his college career, ending a long-standing journey to this milestone.
Dwyer, who has spent most of his time at FGCU on the bench, shared his quest to score his first college point on TikTok, where he has over a million followers.
"I actually thought I missed it. I shot it and I was like oh no. I thought it was long. Cause I shot in that same spot twice last year and I was long both times...Luckily this time it hit the back rim and front of the rim and went in," said Dwyer about finally hitting that elusive basket in Monday's win over New College of Florida.
FGCU head coach Pat Chambers described the excitement in the arena when Dwyer scored.
"The explosion in this arena I don't think I've heard it like that in my time here," said Chambers.
Dwyer expressed relief after finally scoring.
"I woke up and I was like I still got to score. Oh wait, I scored! I don't have to. The roads done," said Dwyer.
Before Monday night, the last time Dwyer recorded a point in a game was in 2021 during the Delaware high school state championship. He shared his journey to his first college bucket on TikTok.
"I can either try to fight it or I can embrace it. And I decided to embrace it and lean into it," said Dwyer.
When Dwyer made the shot Monday night, he was overwhelmed with emotion.
"So much weight was lifted off my shoulders. I didn't even know what celebration I did until I looked back and watched the footage. I think I stuck my tongue out, which I've never done before," said Dwyer.
Chambers praised Dwyer's dedication and hard work.
"It was no surprise he was going to make it because he's put the work in. And when you put the work in, good things happen," said Chambers.
Dwyer didn't stop at one; he hit another three-pointer to close out the night. When asked what's next, Dwyer replied, "road to seven. One at a time."
FGCU defeated New College of Florida 96-60 to open the season. The Eagles will travel to face No. 17 Illinois on Friday night.
