U.S. Senator Ashley Moody held a news conference on Monday, where she campaigned for the Safer Truckers Act.
Moody introduced this legislation to strengthen highway safety and ensure safer conditions for commercial drivers and the traveling public.
The senator began the conference by announcing a record-setting number of travelers for Thanksgiving, approximately 82 million people traveling more than 50 miles outside of their home this year.
Moody then emphasized that due to the increase in travel, the urgency to improve safety on the roadways has been heightened.
The proposed bill will amend Title 49 of the United States Code and require that commercial driver’s licenses be restricted to United States citizens, lawful permanent residents, and individuals authorized by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to engage in employment in the United States that includes driving a commercial motor vehicle, and for other purposes.
Moody’s conference was met with the support of Florida Congressman Greg Steube, who promised to help further the proposed legislation.
