DeSoto County deputy fired for alleged use of unlawful force

A detention sergeant at the DeSoto County Jail has been arrested for battery, according to a statement from the sheriff.

Deputy Luis Tovar was arrested on two counts of battery following an investigation into his conduct. The arrest stems from an investigation that began after Tovar, while on duty as a shift supervisor on December 13, was reported to have used force against two inmates. 

An administrative review led to the involvement of the Criminal Investigations Bureau.

In a statement, DeSoto County Sheriff Potter emphasized the importance of transparency and integrity in law enforcement. 

"As law enforcement and corrections deputies, we have all sworn to uphold and protect the laws of our state and this great nation," Potter said. "However, we are not above the law and must be held accountable for our actions just as any other citizen would be."

Tovar has been relieved of his duties, and his appointment as a detention deputy has been terminated.
