1 injured, 1 arrested after shooting at youth football tournament in Collier County

Gunshots disrupted a youth football tournament at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Collier County, sending one man to the hospital and another to jail. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office reported that 43-year-old James Raynard was hospitalized following the shooting. Authorities said 38-year-old William Wharton, who allegedly fired the shot, faces charges of aggravated battery.

Dajsha Herndon, a mother of a youth football player, expressed her thoughts on the violence.

"It really doesn't matter what's it about, because I don't think you should ever result in violence for anything," said Herndon.

Herndon's 12-year-old son traveled from Washington, D.C., to participate in the tournament.

"It's actually a little scary. And on top of that, I just feel like it's a game of football," said Herndon.

Despite the incident, the American Youth Football League tournament continued. Games went on for hours after the shooting, with Herndon expressing confidence in the complex's security.

"Within the complex, it's very secure as far as security, the county police down here and things like that," said Herndon.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. 

A staff member with the American Youth Football League noted that in 30 years of hosting the tournament, such an incident had never occurred. With more than 200 teams and their families present through Saturday, Herndon emphasized the event's purpose.

"I just feel like it's a game of football. It's just a friendly competition. That's how a lot of parents and coaches and teams have to look at it," said Herndon.

Both the suspect and victim are from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, according to the Collier County Sheriff's Office.

Efforts to get a comment from a staff member at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex were met with a "no comment" response. The tournament is scheduled to continue until 5 p.m. on Friday, with more games planned for Saturday.
