Charlotte County gathers to honor Sgt. Elio Diaz, one year after his death

It has been one year since Charlotte County Sgt. Elio Diaz was killed in the line of duty.

Diaz was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a dedicated law enforcement officer who went above and beyond to serve his community.

Family, friends, and deputies from the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office visited Diaz's burial site to pay their respects. A prayer was held at 4:44 p.m., the exact time Diaz lost his life a year ago.

His death during a traffic stop on December 15, 2024 left a lasting impact on his family, fellow officers, and the community he served. It was a day that rocked Charlotte County.

According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, Diaz spent more than an hour with the driver during the stop, whom he pulled over for not having insurance, before the driver shot and killed him.

Deputies later found the suspect at a Popeyes restaurant.

When deputies asked him to step out of his car, he reached for something and was shot by deputies.

Since the incident, the community has shown nothing but love and support for the Diaz family.

Diaz, a 40-year-old father of four, was remembered as a dedicated deputy with over a decade of service in the county. 

His daughter, Kia Torres, expressed her deep admiration for her father during his funeral back in December.

"Daddy is my best friend, my first love, my role model, my biggest supporter, my protector and my forever superhero," said Torres. "Daddy is my everything."

Tears flowed uncontrollably as his brave daughters spoke about their father.

Nayleshka Luna, said, "I want us to rejoice in his memories and his funny stories and that silent laugh of his that sometimes I tell him, 'Dad, you need to breathe. There's nothing coming out of your mouth. There's no air.'"

During the funeral, Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell spoke of his long-standing relationship with Diaz.

"I've known Elio for 11 years. I had the honor of hiring him and swearing him in," said Prummell. "Rest in Peace my friend, your work here is done."

"Dad was known for the generosity and pure kindness that poured out of him, and that's how I want to remember him," said Luna during the funeral.

Lt. Chris Williams praised Diaz's bravery.

"Poppy intercepted that vehicle, and unfortunately, his kindness was taken too early by a coward," said Williams.

Following Diaz's death, tributes poured in from across Southwest Florida. His memorial at the Chevron filled with flowers, flags, and Cuban coffee. 

Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff, and motorcades lined the streets in a large procession.

One year later, Diaz's memorial remains packed as Southwest Florida continues to honor his memory. 

Back in September, a part of US-41, from Melbourne Street to Church Street, was named the Sergeant Elio Diaz Memorial Highway. Law enforcement from all over the state and all over the country came to Diaz's funeral at the Babcock Ranch Field House last year. 

The world remembers Sgt. Elio Diaz as a hero. His family and community continue to feel his absence every day.

Sergeant Diaz left behind four children.

Many in the community still celebrate his life and dedication to his community, keeping his legacy alive forever.
