Drivers highlight road dangers after I-75 fatal crash

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a seven-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 southbound at Mile Marker 96 that claimed the life of a 52-year-old man from Madeira Beach and sent others to the hospital.

The crash, which involved three semi-trucks, two pickup trucks, and two cars, led to the closure of both northbound and southbound lanes on I-75 near mile marker 96 for more than seven hours.

Troopers reported that the collision began when a semi-truck stopped on the highway due to low visibility caused by smoke. This incident has highlighted the concerns of drivers who frequently use this stretch of road, known for its fast-moving traffic and narrow lanes.

"It's a horrible tragedy, especially before the holidays," said Marissa, reflecting the somber mood of the community.

Jill Pronovich, a driver who often travels on Alligator Alley, expressed her unease about driving in the evenings.

"It's scary. I know that's a very narrow two-lane road. I get nervous out there driving. I'm not going to lie, just because of other drivers. I'm not a perfect driver, but it scares me, especially at night," said Pronovich.

Carlos Rivera, a former road ranger, shared his experiences working on this dangerous stretch of highway.

"Cars are going real quick. Sometimes the police have to stop them because they're just passing real quick," said Rivera. "My friend, the road sometimes is slippery, and that's when the most accidents I had in Alligator Alley, that was every day, cars flipped over."

The Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash. Updates on the recovery of those involved will be shared as more information becomes available.
