FGCU's Alico Arena buzzes as South Carolina Gamecocks come to town

FGCU Women's Basketball recently hosted a marquee matchup against the South Carolina Gamecocks at Alico Arena on Saturday.

The Gamecocks, ranked third in the nation and last year's national title contenders, brought their formidable team to Fort Myers.

South Carolina's head coach, Dawn Staley, shared that the matchup was over a year in the making.

"We tried to get FGCU on the schedule for their home opener, but it didn't work out," said Staley.

The game drew a record-breaking regular season crowd of more than 3,500 fans, marking the highest-ranked opponent FGCU has ever hosted.

"It's so special for us compared to 10 years ago, who we were playing," said an attendee.

FGCU's first-year head coach, Raina Harmon, expressed pride in the opportunity to host such a prestigious team.

"We pride ourselves on being the hometown team, so being able to attract this caliber opponent to come here in Alico speaks volumes," said Harmon.

With Coach Staley's reputation, a significant number of Gamecock fans filled the arena, eager to witness the legendary coach in action.

"This community filled this gym up. They made it really loud in here, and I think they have an appreciation for good basketball," said Staley.

Staley, a two-time national title winner, offered some words of wisdom to Harmon after the game.

"I told her after the game, I'm here to help," said Staley.

Harmon, who has admired Staley throughout her career, shared her excitement about sharing the stage with the renowned coach.

"I've idolized her my entire journey, from a player to a coach, even until now," said Harmon. "And it's just cool to take the same stage as her now as a head coach."

Despite the excitement, the FGCU Eagles fell to the Gamecocks with a final score of 105-43.

The matchup highlighted FGCU's growing stature in college basketball, as they continue to attract high-caliber opponents to their home court.
