Holiday returns: What you need to know about fees and deadlines

The holiday gift-giving season often comes with a wave of returns, and this year is no different.

As gift return season kicks off, shoppers are navigating new guidelines and return fees.

The National Retail Federation reported that approximately 15% of all sales are expected to be returned this year. Some stores are charging a return fee for online orders sent back through the mail.

Marshall's and T.J. Maxx have implemented an $11.99 return fee, Macy's charges $9.99, J.C. Penney's fee is $8, and J.Crew charges $7.50.

Several retailers have also extended their return deadlines.

Best Buy's deadline is Jan. 15, Target's is Jan. 24, and Amazon and Walmart will accept returns until Jan. 31.

To avoid these return fees, shoppers can return gifts in person, though it may be less convenient.

Shoppers looking to replace gifts can find great deals post-Christmas.

Many stores are offering sales on holiday decorations, wrapping paper, and gift bags. Winter clothes and electronics are also typically discounted this time of year, along with home goods, skincare sets, and fitness gear.

Stores are clearing out inventory to prepare for next year, offering the perfect opportunity to snag post-holiday bargains.
