North Port Police search for suspect involved in multiple thefts, aggravated assault

The North Port Police Department responded to reports of a wanted suspect in the Preto and Playmore area. 

The suspect is wanted for firearm possession by a juvenile delinquent, two counts of aggravated assault, and is suspected of multiple vehicle thefts.

On Tuesday, police located a man matching the suspect's description, although his face and hands were concealed. 

When officers approached, he fled on foot. A taser was used, and he was taken into custody.

After contact, it was determined he was not the suspect. He faces charges of obstruction, and the reason for his fleeing is under investigation.

During the response, a police vehicle was involved in a crash at US 41 and River Road. 

According to the police department, the officer had lights and sirens activated and was traveling at a speed of less than five miles per hour when the collision caused the vehicle to roll. 

No life-threatening injuries were reported. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is currently reviewing the incident. The other driver has been cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Police also addressed false social media rumors about detaining individuals for ICE. 

Officers were not involved in immigration enforcement but focused solely on locating the violent offender.

The investigation remains ongoing.
