Rabies alert in Port Charlotte after bat tests positive; pet owners concerned

Charlotte County Animal Control and the Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County issued a 30-day rabies alert in Port Charlotte after a bat tested positive for rabies.

The alert covers areas around McKee Street and Bennett Drive, extending about one mile in each direction. 

 Residents are urged to vaccinate pets against rabies and avoid contact with wildlife. Rabies is present in wild animals and poses a risk to unvaccinated domestic animals.

WINK News spoke to a dog owner in the impacted area, who learned about the alert for the first time Wednesday night.

"Rabies in my head, to be honest, it just makes me worry. I always worry, to be honest, the kids, the dogs, any anyone in this neighborhood," said Melissa Canales, a resident of Port Charlotte.

"I'll be more alert, most definitely, and I will make sure that if I see others that I know, let them know of the alert and see if they're aware of it," Canales said.

"Rabies is a fatal but preventable disease," stated a Charlotte County press release. "Prompt action, vigilance, and responsible pet ownership are key to protecting families, pets, and the community."

Residents should secure homes to prevent bats from entering and report animal bites or scratches to Charlotte County Animal Control at 941-833-5690 or the Florida Department of Health at 941-624-7200.
