Drivers worry over State Road 27 intersection safety issues

Drivers in Glades County say a busy intersection they use every day can be difficult to navigate, especially when trying to turn or cross traffic.

Several drivers told WINK News they have concerns about the intersection of State Road 27 and State Road 78 East, a key route for people who live and work in the area.

Doug Ballenger, a Lakeport resident who drives through the intersection daily for work, says visibility and speed are ongoing issues…particularly at night.

“I travel it in the morning, I travel at nighttime,” Ballenger said. “It’s hard to see on both sides.”

Drivers say problems are especially noticeable where the roadway transitions from asphalt to concrete. Ballenger explained that the change in surface can make lane markings difficult to see, even for people familiar with the area.

“It’s a white road with white lines,” he said. “That’s basically what you see during the day. At nighttime, it’s hard to see the lines.”

Ballenger said turning movements, especially onto State Road 27, can be challenging when traffic is moving quickly.

“Trying to determine where to turn can be difficult,” he said. “Speed in that area is definitely a concern.”

Some drivers told WINK News that while waiting for a safe gap in traffic, they can end up partially in a travel lane, increasing the risk of close calls. Ballenger said that while longtime residents may know the intersection well, newer drivers may struggle.

“If somebody doesn’t know the area, they really have to pay attention,” he said. “People who are new down here might not know exactly where to stop or turn.”

Glades County confirms it has received complaints about the intersection and says concerns have been discussed with the Florida Department of Transportation. The county says the roadway is part of the state system and is maintained by FDOT.

According to FDOT’s website, a construction project is currently underway at the intersection, including concrete reconstruction, new pavement markings, and updated signage.
