Fort Myers man arrested after caught with $33K in fake checks

A Fort Myers man has been arrested after police caught him with over $33,000 in fake checks.

Fort Myers police arrested Jose Gregorio Romero Carvajal on Monday night, during a breach of peace investigation on Palm Beach Boulevard.

The case involved suspected fraudulent check activity.

Officers found Carvajal's vehicle downtown and conducted a traffic stop. During the stop, they recovered multiple check orders discarded from the vehicle valued at approximately $33,394.

Carvajal, the sole occupant, was operating without a valid driver's license and had an active out-of-county warrant. He was taken into custody and transported to Lee County Jail.

He faces charges including fleeing and eluding law enforcement, fraud and impersonation, tampering with evidence, and operating a vehicle without a valid license.

The investigation is ongoing.
