New York man accused of grand theft auto, possessing 'large' amount of marijuana in Lee County

Estero, Fla.— The Florida Highway Patrol arrested a man accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz and possession of a large amount of marijuana, two stolen shotguns, and ammunition in Lee County.

Troopers arrested Bradley Daniel Roberts, 42, from New York, on Tuesday after law enforcement attempted to perform a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle on U.S. 41 in Estero.

According to troopers, Roberts was traveling in excess of 120 mph, giving chase. The pursuit concluded with a PIT maneuver, bringing the speeding Mercedes-Benz to a stop on Corkscrew Road, west of Via Coconut Point.

Roberts then allegedly exited his vehicle along with his 14-year-old son and proceeded to flee from law enforcement.

Troopers located Roberts, subduing him through taser use. His son was found hiding behind a nearby Publix.

Following Roberts' arrest, troopers searched his vehicle, where they found a “large” amount of marijuana, which they say was packaged with intent to distribute, two stolen shotguns, ammunition, US currency, and additional drug paraphernalia. 

WINK News traveled to the scene on Tuesday, where our reporters witnessed Roberts being taken into custody.

According to troopers, Roberts had an active warrant out of New York for burglary with full extradition.

He faces charges including three counts of grand theft, fleeing, reckless driving, possession of a stolen driver’s license, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and felony drug possession. He was taken into the Lee County Jail.

Roberts’ son was also arrested for resisting without violence and obstruction. Troopers added that the Department of Children and Families was notified.
