Car plunges into canal on Old 41 in Lee County; driver found at home

LEE COUNTY, Fla. —

The San Carlos Park Fire and Rescue District received a call just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday for a car submerged in a canal along Old 41.

A swimmer from the fire district checked the vehicle for the driver, and a dive team from the Iona McGregor Fire District was also called to the scene, but neither team could locate the driver.

"That's some pretty crazy stuff right there. People need to learn how to drive," said Morgan Gosnell from Estero.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office took over the investigation and found the driver at their home.

Neighbors are now urging drivers to be more cautious.

"There are cars that go down the street pretty fast and then they're not paying attention. So, other than that, I think something should be done," said Mario Leavy from Downtowner Car Wash on Old 41.

We've reached out to the Lee County Sheriff's Office to find out who the driver is and if they're facing any charges.
