Fort Myers rings in New Year with chilly weather and lively celebrations

DOWNTOWN FORT MYERS, Fla., - Downtown Fort Myers is buzzing with excitement despite a chilly New Year's Eve. Locals and visitors alike are braving the cold to join in the celebrations.

"100% we're gonna be out there coats on if we have to," said Frank Schneider, a visitor to Fort Myers.

Gage Thacker, a local, welcomed the change in weather.

"It's definitely a break from the heat, but it's, it's nice to have some cold," said Thacker.

Businesses in the area are hoping for a lively night. Hannah Bennett, an employee at Scoops on First, expressed optimism.

"We normally don't have this cold of New Year's Eve, so hopefully everyone wants to come out and still party and get ice cream," said Bennett. "I did ask if it was too cold for ice cream, and everyone said, No, it's never too cold."

Haley Hanson, manager of Franklin Shops, noted an increase in downtown activity.

"We are popping today. People can't come to the beach because it's cold outside, so when they come downtown, come shopping," said Hanson.

Joe Schneider, another visitor, shared his appreciation for the weather.

"This is beautiful weather. I can't ask for a better, better time down here," said Schneider.

As the streets bustle with activity, some locals suggest practical advice for navigating the area.

"Long as the bars are open. People are definitely gonna end up being out," said a local.

Another local recommended using Uber to avoid parking hassles.

"Just getting Uber, especially later on tonight, whenever everyone's trying to come out, especially for the ball drop," they said. "I'd say the best bet is probably the parking garage if you can't find anything on the street."

The Fort Myers Police Department assured that extra patrols would be present to ensure safety during the festivities. The celebrations, featuring live music, a ball drop, and fireworks, are set to continue until 12:30 a.m.
