Florida Power and Light is officially hiking up your rates

If you use Florida Power and Light, listen up! Now, you'll be paying a bit more to keep the lights on.

Florida Power and Light is officially hiking up your rates starting Jan. 1.

FPL has been debating the increase talks for months. Now the proposal becomes a reality for people in Florida.

FPL rates are set to go up about $2.50 per month. This is about $30 per year.

It's the biggest rate hike in FPL's history.

The company says it will support critical investments in the electric grid over the next four years.

Some residents we spoke with agree that paying a few extra dollars is worth it.

"You've got to bring up the infrastructure. I have to say we've been lucky. FPL, I think, has been doing an excellent job. We haven't lost power during the last couple of storm seasons, so yeah, it has to be done," said Fort Myers resident Debra Stice.

FPL says the rate changes will help avoid outages and support Florida's growth. It will also bring in billions of dollars for their shareholders.
