Historic Burroughs Home in Fort Myers set to reopen after renovations following Hurricane Ian

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

The historic Burroughs Home in Fort Myers will reopen to visitors next week after undergoing significant renovations due to damage from Hurricane Ian.

"The city being the owners of the home and us being the caretakers working together in this, seeing this come to fruition. It's bringing Fort Myers back," Melissa Coon, from the Uncommon Friends Foundation, said.

Crews have repaired the roof of the Georgian Revival mansion, applied a new paint job, and built a new porch with special attention to historical craftsmanship.

The home, gifted to the city of Fort Myers in 1978, is set to return as a central venue for weddings, charity galas, and holiday teas.

"She's been through so many of these. She just kind of brushes them off, and we're thankful she does so well. I think it's just a sign of the strength of this community," said Marc Collins, director of the Uncommon Friends Foundation.

The reopening coincides with the 125th anniversary of the Burroughs Home, marking a significant milestone in preserving the city's heritage.
