Wolf Moon rises tonight: Final of four consecutive supermoons shines over Southwest Florida

The first full moon of 2026 will appear this evening in our Southwest Florida sky. Moonrise occurs at 5:01pm Friday evening, with the moon officially becoming full at 5:03am on Saturday.

Dating back to October of 2025, we have been treated to a parade of supermoons. The January full moon will be the last of 4 consecutive supermoons, with the next supermoon not arriving until later this year in November.

A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with moon’s closest approach to Earth in its orbit. This allows the full moon to appear both brighter and larger to us stargazers on Earth. The January full moon is called the "Wolf Moon" because the howling of wolves is typically heard this time of year.

Weather conditions in Southwest Florida the night of Friday, Jan. 2 will be favorable to see the full moon. Partly cloudy skies in the evening will give way to mostly clear skies tonight. Temperatures will drop from the 60s into the 50s overnight.
