Officers discover litany of drugs during New Year's Day traffic stop in Naples

NAPLES, Fla. —

A Lakeland man and a Tampa woman are facing numerous drug-related charges after Naples police said they uncovered numerous illegal narcotics during a traffic stop.

On the morning of New Year's Day, officers stopped the vehicle for not stopping at a flashing red traffic signal at Third Street South and Broad Avenue South.

According to the Naples Police Department, officers noticed an odor of marijuana and suspicious behavior from the front-seat passenger, later identified as Rina Larson, 30. Officers also said the evidence seen in plain view and subsequent testing gave probable cause for a search of the vehicle and occupants.

NPD said officers found the following during their search:

• 129.9 grams of oxycodone
• 129.9 grams of amphetamine
• 14.9 grams of marijuana in pre-rolled joints
• 22.6 grams of fentanyl
• 3.2 grams of marijuana
• 0.5 grams of cocaine
• Drug paraphernalia consistent with narcotics distribution (Digital scales and packaging materials)
• A loaded Smith & Wesson .40 caliber firearm with an altered serial number (concealed and readily accessible within the vehicle, according to police)

Larson and the driver, Joshua Cunningham, 33, were both arrested.

Larson is facing charges of drug trafficking, possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, and firearm violations. Cunningham is facing a drug paraphernalia possession charge.

Cunningham was also issued traffic citations for failing to stop at the flashing red signal and for possessing an open alcoholic beverage container, Naples police said.
