Deputies swarm Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres

LEHIGH ACRES - A day at the park turned chaotic when gunshots rang out at Veterans Park on Monday afternoon.

Lupita Rios was riding her bike with her kids when she heard fighting and then gunshots, prompting her and other families to take cover.

"There was other little kids playing in the playground and as we were trying to leave I saw parents with their little ones hiding behind vehicles hiding behind trees and then the police arrived really quick," said Rios.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident, which they say involved a large disturbance and multiple shots fired into the air.

Witnesses reported that the chaos began with a fight among teenagers. "The teenagers that were fighting and caused all of this," said Rios. "There was more over 40 of them."

WINK news cameras captured K-9 units and deputies at the scene, with one person handcuffed.

Rios expressed concerns about park security, saying, "It's such a big park and there's so many people that go there not only kids but you know adults if there's it's just too big. And I think there is more security needed."

Authorities confirmed one person was injured, though not by gunfire, and one person is in custody.
