Lehigh Acres families uneasy after shots fired at Veterans Park

Families in Lehigh Acres are expressing concerns after a recent incident involving gunshots at Veterans Park, a popular family destination.

Residents like Alexis Hamilton worry about safety in a place meant for children. 

"It's heartbreaking because I bring my boys here all the time, and I'm usually by myself, so it just makes me fearful for not only myself, but also for my children," said Hamilton.

"We have so many little kids running around. When I come here, it's always full," said Megan Link, another resident of Lehigh Acres.

Hamilton said she finds it challenging to process violence in such a family-oriented space and believes increased security measures are necessary.

"You don't ever really see law enforcement here. I think cameras would be beneficial, and I also think law enforcement would be beneficial if we had law enforcement presence in other areas, such as libraries, banks, or even parks. I think that we should have law enforcement here as well," said Hamilton.

Hamilton also shared how the incident has heightened her vigilance.

"I'm always looking around. I'm always watching my children, just because anything can happen anywhere. But definitely it makes me more fearful to come here now, especially without my husband," she said.

In response to these concerns, Lee County Parks and Recreation assured that they work closely with law enforcement throughout the county. 

The Lee County Sheriff's Office confirmed its commitment to safety, stating, "The safety and security of our residents remains our top priority. Second precinct deputies and detectives have increased patrols at Veterans Park and will work alongside park rangers to enhance visibility."
