Estero residents worry about traffic as new developments proceed

ESTERO, Fla. —

Major developments along U.S. Route 41 and Coconut Road in Estero are moving forward, transforming the area with new apartments and retail shops, but residents are concerned about the potential impact on traffic.

Lindsay Guidner, who commutes on US-41 daily, described the situation as "a mess" and worries that new developments could worsen traffic conditions.

"I live about eight miles from my office. During the season, it takes me about 45 to an hour to get home. Not in season. It's about 15 minutes, so I can't even imagine with the additional traffic what that's going to be like," she said.

Several developments are breaking ground along US-41 and Coconut Road, bringing more housing options as more people move to the area.

The Estero Planning and Zoning Board approved the Woodfield development in November 2024, which will add residential and commercial options for Estero.

Jamee Case, who works in the area, sees both the benefits and drawbacks of the construction.

"Development is always nice. It brings convenience," she said. "But then the traffic is a problem here. So I think, bottom line: it will be a problem with the traffic effect."

In addition to the Woodfield development, plans for a new sports complex, townhomes, dining areas, a hotel, retail stores, offices, and a fishing pier are also underway.

Despite traffic concerns, community leaders, planning and zoning officials, and Engage Estero remain positive about the overall impacts these developments will bring to Lee County.
