Cape Coral man accused of stealing over $1K in merchandise in Home Depot heist

CAPE CORAL, Fla. —

A Cape Coral man was arrested after being accused of multiple thefts at a local Home Depot store.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department, Nicholas Tollner, 44, was arrested following an investigation into a series of thefts at the Home Depot located on Skyline Boulevard between May 8 and May 29. 2025.

Officers responded to the Home Depot for a theft reported by the store's asset protection staff. The staff observed a man take merchandise past all points of sale without paying and exit the store on May 29, 2025, CCPD said.

Asset protection personnel intervened and recovered about $698 worth of merchandise from Tollner before he left the store premises, CCPD said.

Investigations revealed that Tollner was linked to three prior "price-switching" incidents, where he altered item prices by scanning lower-priced tags at self-checkout registers, according to CCPD. The combined value of the thefts in those incidents was $1,012.48, CCPD said.

Tollner was arrested on Wednesday and faces a charge of grand theft.
