CROW issues warning on pelican feeding

SANIBEL, Fla. —

The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife is reminding residents that it is illegal to feed pelicans in Florida and that feeding them may kill them.

CROW says recently, it has had multiple cases of pelicans with fish fillet scraps stuck in their throats. It says the bare bones of these carcasses get caught while going down, preventing the pelican from swallowing properly. This can block any other food that the pelican tries to eat.

CROW is reminding residents that in Florida, pelican feeding is illegal. It says you can show your love for these animals by disposing of all fishing-related waste properly.
