SWFL Wood Art Expo celebrates 40 years of turning trees into treasures

Have you ever had a tree fall in your yard and wondered what to do with the leftovers? In Southwest Florida, some artists see that wood as the start of something special.

The Southwest Florida Wood Art Expo celebrates its 40th year this weekend, bringing together wood artists from across the state and beyond. Crafters travel from all over Florida, with some artists even coming from Puerto Rico, all to show how a simple block of wood can become a work of art.

Step inside the expo and you will find everything from ballerina mice and lifelike chocolate carvings to a life sized carving of a Native American. The variety is part of what keeps people coming back year after year.

The event features wood carvers, turners, chippers and more. Artists compete in categories ranging from novice to master, giving beginners and seasoned professionals alike a chance to showcase their skills. Judges award prizes across multiple styles and techniques, highlighting just how diverse wood art can be.

Lou Currier, president of the Southwest Florida Wood Art Expo, said the event opens people’s eyes to a form of art that is often overlooked.

“It exposes the wood arts which a lot of people do not get the chance to see,” Currier said. “You go to galleries and see different kinds of art but do not look at wood as art. Just come and see that it is a true art form.”

Currier said he hopes visitors leave inspired and curious enough to take a class or try wood art themselves.

The expo is more than just finished pieces. Attendees can browse handcrafted bowls, shop for tools and specialty wood from around the world, and watch live demonstrations from skilled artists.

The Southwest Florida Wood Art Expo takes place Friday and Saturday at the Charlotte Harbor Conference and Event Center. Tickets are $10 at the door.
