New veterans nursing home to open in Collier County by 2028

COLLIER COUNTY - A new state veterans nursing home is set to rise in Collier County, promising much-needed skilled nursing services for veterans.

The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, along with Collier County, dedicated nearly 24 acres at the former Golden Gate Golf Course for this project. This will be the state's 10th veterans nursing facility.

Burt Saunders, chairman of the Collier County Commission, said, "We are dedicating 23 acres of land for a veterans nursing home facility and an adult day care facility for our veterans." The county is handing over the land to the state government, with the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs managing the project.

Retired Major General James Hartsell of the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs is overseeing the development. He said, "We're going to have 120 beds for a skilled nursing facility, we're also going to have adult day health care here, first time we've ever done that in Florida."

Captain Wayne Smith, a former POW in Vietnam, expressed his excitement about the project. "Oh my gosh, yes. Yeah. Couldn't be more wonderful. It's wonderful," said Smith.

Veterans who may use the facility shared their enthusiasm. One said, "Unbelievable, truly amazing," while a World War II veteran added, "The way they're planning it is just right. Perfect, perfect."

The facility is expected to open in 2028, with the only requirements for acceptance being a veteran and a Florida resident.
