Allegiant and Sun Country Airlines announce merger

Allegiant and Sun Country Airlines announced that the two companies will merge in an attempt to create a leading, more competitive leisure-focused airline.

On Sunday, it was announced that Allegiant had acquired Sun County Airlines in a merger and that the combination will expand service to more popular destinations across the U.S. and overseas.

"Allegiant and Sun Country are well-positioned to create one of the most adaptable and resilient airline models in the industry, with the ability to respond quickly to changing market conditions, traveler demand, and charter and cargo partner needs," a press release said.

The two companies combined will serve approximately 22 million annual customers. With flights to nearly 175 cities and more than 650 routes from 195 aircraft, according to the press release.

"This combination is an exciting next chapter in Allegiant and Sun Country's shared mission in providing affordable, reliable, and convenient service from underserved communities to premier leisure destinations," Gregory C. Anderson, Allegiant CEO, said. "We have long admired Sun Country for their well-run, flexible, and diversified business model that optimizes for year-round utilization and strong margins. Together, our complementary networks will expand our reach to more vacation destinations including international locations."

Until the transaction is finalized, the two airlines will continue to operate independently, and booking procedures will remain the same.
