Looking to kick off the new year with a gym membership? The Better Business Bureau has some handy tips to help you make the right choice.
Bryan Oglesby from the Better Business Bureau suggests trying out a gym's free trial period to see if it's a good fit.
He said, "Never feel pressure to join the gym on the spot. And also, if anything verbal is promised to you in the walk-through with the gym, make sure that verbal promise is put in writing."
Consider the gym's location and your commute. If it's not convenient, you might stop going.
Oglesby also advises knowing your budget, taking a tour to ensure the gym has the equipment and classes you want, and asking about busy times.
Don't fall for high-pressure sales tactics. Read the contract thoroughly and calculate the true costs, as introductory offers might not include everything. Understand the options for freezing or canceling your membership.
If you have trouble with a contract or canceling a membership, the Better Business Bureau can help mediate. They also have a list of approved gyms.
