Estero residents debate future of vacant Regal Cinema site at Coconut Point

ESTERO, Fla.—A discussion is underway about transforming the long-vacant Regal Cinema site at Coconut Point Mall in Estero into a residential development. 

The theater closed more than three years ago, and the building has remained vacant since then. 

Simon Property Group, the owner of Coconut Point, is requesting an amendment to redevelop the theater. 

According to Gulfshore Business, the proposal would replace the theater with up to 365 multifamily residential units. 

Simon Property Group told WINK News the units are designed to be walkable to the mall’s shops and restaurants. 

Michael Waterman, who lives with his wife just behind Coconut Point, expressed his preference for entertainment options instead of more residential development. 

"We just preferred having something live, you know, another theater, performing arts, something like that," said Waterman. "I thought it would be a lot better for the community." Michelle Sherry, an employee at the mall, also emphasized the potential benefits of entertainment options. "I know that people who live here come to our shops, which is great, but entertainment, I think, would bring more people," said Sherry. 

Simon Property Group is scheduled to present the proposal to Estero’s planning board tomorrow.
