Fort Myers Beach man accused of shooting and killing friend

FORT MYERS BEACH - A deadly shooting on Fort Myers Beach left one man dead and another behind bars early Sunday morning.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office reported that the accused, Carlos Gonzalez, called deputies to confess to shooting a friend.

This shooting occurred in the 400 block of Madison Court.

Deputies from the Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene shortly after midnight. Despite lifesaving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead.

Gonzalez was detained and later charged with manslaughter. The Major Crimes Unit is investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting.

"Something like this can happen anywhere, like anywhere at all," said Fort Myers Beach resident Pete Mayher.

He said Gonzalez was a familiar face in the community.

"Real nice guy, kids I would always see him on his boat with his children and yeah good guy," said Mayher. "We were friend acquaintances, neighbors we were neighbors and that was it."

Investigators are working to determine exactly what led up to the shooting. Gonzalez remains in the Lee County Jail on charges of manslaughter.
