Wine bottles, gun and delay in 911 call at deadly Fort Myers Beach shooting scene

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. —

Lee County deputies are investigating a deadly shooting on Fort Myers Beach, where homeowner Carlos Gonzalez was arrested after calling 911 to report he had shot his friend.

After midnight Sunday, the Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to a blue home off Estero Boulevard and Madison Court following reports of a shooting.

In court Monday morning, Gulf Coast News learned Gonzalez plans to hire a private attorney. The state intends to file a motion to keep him held in jail.

According to LCSO, Gonzalez did not call 911 immediately after the shooting, which delayed emergency services and left units short on time to render aid to the victim. Deputies also noted that Gonzalez appeared to be intoxicated.

Inside the home, deputies say they also found empty wine bottles, along with a handgun on the kitchen counter.

Neighbors are searching for answers as they try to learn who has died.

"It was just crazy. It was like at least 10 police cars and ambulances on the street," said neighbor Pedro Gomez.

"This is a tragedy for our entire island, and I really hope that we can figure out what exactly happened, share it with the community so that we know and we have a better understanding, because the speculation isn't helping us sleep at night," said neighbor Captain Melody King.

LCSO did confirm the victim was a man. The major crimes unit is still investigating what led up to the shooting.
