Developers look to redesign Regal Cinema theater at Coconut Point into apartments

ESTERO, Fla. —

A proposal to transform the vacant Regal Cinema theater at Coconut Point in Estero into a five-story, 365-unit apartment building is drawing mixed reactions from residents ahead of the Tuesday meeting with the village of Estero Planning, Zoning and Design Board.

The theater closed in 2022 after its owner, Cineworld, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Estero resident Ian Voakes expressed his disapproval of the plan, saying, "Regal Theater needs to be demoed. I think the citizens of Estero and Southwest Florida would like to see an entertainment district."

Developers Simon and Waypoint Residential, who are behind the proposal, declined to comment before the meeting but stated, "This project reflects the continued evolution of the property and our commitment to invest in the center."

Bonita Springs resident Vicki Angus shared her perspective, saying, "It depends on what kind of apartments they're putting in. There is a need for more affordable housing."

There will be no vote at the meeting, but the public will have the opportunity to speak about the project.
