Duo accused of stealing backpack in Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

Two people were arrested Sunday after being accused of stealing a backpack in Fort Myers.

According to the Fort Myers Police Department, around 3:05 p.m. Jan. 9, officers responded to a call from the victim, who said he had left his bag on the sidewalk by accident, and that when he returned to retrieve it, it was gone.

Officers reviewed camera footage of the scene, which was on Edwards Drive between Hendry Street and Jackson Street.

Camera footage showed two cars, a black SUV potentially driven by Felipe de Armas Celis, 26, and a sedan potentially driven by Lianetzy Susana Hernandez Obregon, 25, FMPD said.

Obregon was seen on camera walking over to the backpack, opening it and showing the contents of it to the driver of the SUV. Obregon then put the backpack in the trunk, and both vehicles drove off, FMPD said.

On Sunday, around 10:38 p.m., officers received a call from Celis, who wanted to gather more information about the incident.

Celis and Obregon agreed to meet with officers at the Fort Myers Police Department station, FMPD said.

Celis and Obregon were arrested and face charges of grand theft. Their cellphones were submitted to the FMPD as evidence.
