Fort Myers riverfront may see luxury hotel and marina expansion

A new proposal could transform the waterfront near downtown Fort Myers, featuring plans for a luxury hotel, high-end apartments, retail space, and an expanded marina along the Caloosahatchee River. The proposed development is set to be located next to Pinchers Restaurant, just steps away from one of the city's most historic corridors.

City leaders recently reviewed the proposal, which aims to bring significant development to the area. While many community members support the idea, some city officials expressed their reservations.

Cal Wilkens, a Fort Myers resident, shared his enthusiasm for the project.

"I think it's great. I think anything that they can do to bring more business into downtown and just keep the downtown thriving, I'm all pro-business," said Wilkens.

Local business owners also echoed this sentiment.

"It's going to help us all," said Dr. Tim Ferguson, owner of Enjewel Boutique. "As a small business person, I want to see growth and development downtown, but I want to see responsible growth and development."

However, during a recent city council meeting, some members questioned the suitability of such large buildings near McGregor Boulevard. Councilman Liston Bochette voiced his opposition to the development's location.

"I'll just be real. I don't want to see apartments or commercial on McGregor Boulevard ever, never. And I'll drive a stake into that," said Bochette.

Despite the divided opinions, Mayor Anderson emphasized the importance of growth and development in preserving the unique character of Fort Myers.

"What we have to realize and accept is that growth is coming," said Anderson. "Do we manage it and do we take advantage of it, or do we let growth take advantage of us?"

Nola Wilkens, another Fort Myers resident, expressed excitement about the potential changes.

"This is a beautiful town, and I think it's just a gem. So anything that can help this town thrive, and, you know, just keep doing better, it's great," said Wilkens.

The proposal remains in its early stages, with no timeline set for a final decision.
