2 dead, 2 officers injured after shooting in Gainesville Wednesday

GAINESVILLE, Fla. —

Two police officers were shot and two other people are dead, including the suspected gunman, after a shooting in Gainesville on Wednesday morning.

Two Gainesville police officers who responded to the scene at East University Avenue near Waldo Road were shot, the Gainesville Police Department confirmed.

WCJB reports, the officers saw a car that appeared to be fleeing the scene. The officers attempted to stop the car, but the suspect got out of the car and shot the officers.

Additional officers responded to the scene and shot and killed the suspect.

During the investigation of the scene, officers found the body of an additional person inside a hardware store, WCJB said. Officers believe that the victim's death is related to the initial reports of shots fired.

Officials confirmed that the officers' injuries were non-life-threatening and that they are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
