How to spot AI-generated images

Images created by artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly difficult to spot, and experts say people should look for context clues and strange visual details before trusting what they see online.

Check the context first

Red flags often come from the scenario in which a suspicious image appears. Urgent requests, odd payment methods or emotional appeals, especially when combined with political content, can indicate something may not be authentic. When in doubt, it's recommended to verify with the original source, such as contacting a loved one offline if their image appears with a questionable message.

Zoom in for visual clues

Recent viral AI images have contained giveaways of commonalities in AI-generated photos. Upon closer inspection, the photo revealed physical oddities like glasses that appeared to melt into his face, fingers that didn’t close naturally around a coffee cup, and a crucifix missing part of its chain.

Look for body part problems

Experts say checking for symmetrical features and body parts is another useful step, especially hands, which may show extra or missing fingers. Disproportionate ears, feet or facial elements can also suggest the image was computer-generated.

Watch for strange surfaces and lighting

Strange textures, glossy effects, or backgrounds with uneven blurs can also indicate AI manipulation.

Errors are fading, but still detectable

Still, analysts warn that AI technology is improving fast, and obvious flaws may become less common. High-resolution images and zooming in can still help identify inconsistencies that reveal the truth behind the picture.
