Couple caught on camera lurking in Cape Coral family's backyard

CAPE CORAL, Fla. —

A couple was caught on camera wandering through a family's backyard in Cape Coral, without an invitation, prompting neighbors to remain vigilant and police to remind residents of their rights.

The incident occurred at a home located along Chiquita Boulevard and Southwest 54th Terrace, south of Cape Coral Parkway. Security footage from Friday shows two individuals, a shirtless man and a woman in a dress, stepping out of a white Volkswagen Beetle.

They bypassed the front door, opting instead to head straight for the backyard. Neighbors were surprised by the incident.

"I don't know, it's very unusual," said Dan Kaiser, a Cape Coral neighbor.

The video later shows the pair walking around the pool area and the fenced property near the canal, never approaching the front door. The homeowners, who did not recognize the couple or give them permission to be there, called the police.

The Cape Coral Police Department noted that such cases can be complex, especially if no "No Trespassing" sign is posted. Without these signs, homeowners must verbally instruct someone to leave.

"If that's the law, I guess, that's something that we should all consider to do," Kaiser said.

In this instance, no one was home, and the only witness was the security camera.

"If someone is on your property, you're not home, you don't know them, and they don't have permission, make sure you call," said Mercedes Simonds, Cape Coral Police Public Affairs Officer.

Police emphasized that even without posted signs, individuals can still be charged with loitering or prowling if they are believed to be on the property without permission.
