St. James City shooting leaves community seeking answers and healing

ST. JAMES CITY, Fla.—A deadly shooting in St. James City has left residents with more questions than answers. 

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon on the 3900 block of Crestwell Court, where the Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to an active domestic violence investigation.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies were met by a suspect who armed himself with a firearm. The situation escalated, and the suspect was ultimately shot and killed by law enforcement. No deputies were injured during the incident.

"I was shocked, because this area is tranquil, like, it's very quiet," said an anonymous neighbor. "You wouldn't think anything like that would happen there.

The small community of St. James City is struggling to understand the events that led to this deputy-involved shooting.

"The island is so small, and everybody sticks together," said another anonymous resident. "When you hear something like that happen, you're kind of like, oh God."

Jeannie, another resident, expressed concerns about how the situation was handled. "I'm just wondering if they gave the guy a chance to talk," she said. "What was his mental state at the time?"

The Lee County Sheriff's Office stated that two deputies involved are on paid administrative leave, but it remains unclear if one or both fired their weapons.

"You know, at that point, the deputy had a job to do," said a neighbor. "But at the same time, somebody's burying their son, their husband. It's a no-win for anybody involved."

Residents are hoping for answers and healing for everyone affected by the tragic event.

"It's just, it's so sad for everybody," said a neighbor. "But hopefully everybody can just heal and process what happened."

The investigation is ongoing, and the community awaits further updates from law enforcement.
